Kingswood Residence

A Contemporary House Extension to an existing family home in Kingswood.

The Kingswood Residence Addition brings an existing 1920’s family house up to date with an increase in floor space to meet the day to day needs of a growing family. The existing dwelling sits on an established landscaped site in the historic area of Kingswood. The floor plan has been designed around an existing Elm tree – the owners childhood memories of growing up with an elm tree was a key driver here. The addition separates the roof from the walls by ‘floating’ a new transparent structure over all of the new spaces in a sharp edged skillion that curves smoothly to gather up the different sized spaces below. Below the floating timber roof plane views are available to the existing villa’s large roof, the sky and trees beyond the site and to north sun for winter warming. In deliberate contrast to the existing Villa, the new addition is a contemporary everyday social living environment with the feel of a ‘Pavilion in the Garden’ and as a result intensifies the owner’s relationship with the local natural setting.
